Ferry disaster off the coast of Northern Cyprus: Rescue operation underway

Rescue teams are still trying to reach 23 people after the ferry capsized. Seven people died. - CNN Türk reports, citing local authorities.

The accident occurred shortly after leaving port. Turkish Coast Guard units and a rescue helicopter were immediately dispatched to the site. Other boats from Kyrenia also joined the action to support rescuers.

The situation on site was described as very serious. Kyrenia's mayor, Murat Senkul, confirmed that there were 270 people on board.

Rescuers reached 159 passengers

In an interview with CNN Turk Senkul said emergency services "managed to reach" 159 of the 258 passengers.

TRNC Public Works and Transport Minister Erhan Arikli told Turkish television NTV that passengers were being transferred to other vessels near the crash site. Four maritime units belonging to the Coast Guard Command of the Republic of Northern Cyprus and a passenger ship are operating on site. Coast Guard Command deployed an additional five Marine units and two Coast Guard helicopters. The operation is supported by six warships.
