Free open-air cinema on Jungfernstieg in Hamburg

In the next few days, film fans in Hamburg can watch blockbusters in a unique setting and save a lot of money. From Thursday to Sunday, films will be shown again on a floating screen on Jungfernstieg from 8:15 p.m.

“A cinema screen on the Alster, films in the open air and free of charge - I think that only exists in Hamburg,” said the director of the Hamburg Film Festival, Malika Rabahallah, to the German Press Agency. “On four evenings we show wonderful films, great cinematic moments, to revel in, laugh, cry and have a say.”

Four colorful films

The animated film “Flow” starts on Thursday, followed by “Notting Hill” in the original English version with German subtitles on Friday. The German cinema hit “Fack ju Göhte” will be shown on Saturday. At the end on Sunday, viewers can look forward to “Little Miss Sunshine” in the original English version with German subtitles.

What happens when it rains?

“We hope that the weather god is a cinema fan,” said Rabahallah. But even in rain showers you can make yourself comfortable on the steps on the Jungfernstieg. “Please dress well with rain capes and raincoats, umbrellas are also allowed,” she said.

It's worth arriving early to get the best seats. The seating options on the steps of the Jungfernstieg are limited.

The Binnenalster Film Festival is a foretaste of the soon-to-be-launched Hamburg Film Festival, which is one of the organizers of the free open-air cinema. On October 3rd there will also be “Free Entry Day” at the Hamburg Film Festival. A total of 14 cinemas show films for free.
