A woman raised the alarm about an alleged assault in a park in Malmö last October, which triggered a major police operation.
It was an evening in October last year that the alarm came in, which led to 14 police patrols, dog patrols and an ambulance being sent to the park. There, the woman was found lying on the ground in a bush, apparently unconscious. When the woman woke up, she said that a man who had been stalking her in the park had grabbed her, hit her and tried to rape her. The woman was taken to hospital and the incident caused widespread concern among Malmö residents and an increased police presence in the area around the park.
But during the police investigation it emerged that no attempted rape had ever occurred but that the alarm was false. Days before, the woman had discussed the scenario with Chat gpt, it turned out when the police examined the contents of her mobile phone.
In the chats, she has described an assault very similar to the one she later reports and asked the AI tool what the emergency center would ask her if something like that happened. The answer section contains detailed descriptions.
"Would you like me to help you formulate exactly what you can say to the alarm center step by step, as a little template to keep in your head if it happens?" the AI assistant helpfully offers.
During the trial, the woman admitted that she had lied in the emergency call. She has explained the lies by saying that she suffers from obsessive thoughts and acts impulsively, without being able to control her actions.
On Thursday, the now 19-year-old woman was convicted of false alarm. The prosecutor considered that the crime is to be considered serious, but the Malmö district court did not agree.
- After reviewing the preparatory work and the legal practice that is available in the area, there is no clear support that it would be a serious crime in this case. Although the public has felt great concern over the false alarm, no one can be said to be directly affected. Nor has anyone been wrongly singled out as the perpetrator, says the court's chairman, district attorney Armin Khajehdehi, in a written comment.
The penalty is a daily fine.
