Artificial intelligence at the heart of the debates: resignation at Anthropic and film on Sam Altman

Will artificial intelligence take over our skin? Some are already starting to flee it. Jacob Coxon, a British researcher, sounded the alarm on Tuesday, September 8, by announcing his resignation on the social network X from Anthropic, his artificial intelligence company. “Neither company is acting responsibly. They are heading straight towards a superintelligence capable of improving itself and playing with our lives,” he explains.

Coincidence? The same day, Neon published the trailer for Artificial, the new film by Luca Guadagnino (Call me by your name, Challengers). The feature film immerses Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, in the five tumultuous days of November 2023 when he was fired and then reinstated at the head of his company, creator of the artificial intelligence Chat GTP.

Andrew Garfield, who already played a social network founder in the film The Social Network (2010) about the birth of Facebook, this time tackles another flagship moment of the Internet. He plays Sam Altman wandering through a futuristic office mansion, lined with guns, in the era of Trumpist America. “We have created a machine that will solve the world's problems. We’re going to call it ChatGPT,” he says in voiceover, before adding: “We opened Pandora’s box together. The future is inevitable: countries will collapse, entire industries will collapse.”

Interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter, Andrew Garfield confessed to never having met Sam Altman. “I based it on the script, the court transcripts, the interviews and the research,” he explains. Before adding: “I think that anyone who assumes such a level of responsibility for a company or a technology that we know will cause enormous damage to humanity must have a certain capacity for dissociation.”
