The MDB is divided in its support for the 2022 elections, with some state directories supporting Lula's re-election and others supporting Flávio Bolsonaro's candidacy. The party seeks to balance positions ahead of the second round.
The leader of the MDB in the Federal Senate, Eduardo Braga (AM), declared this Tuesday (13) support for the re-election of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), on behalf of the party's senators, and came out in defense of the state directorates that also support the re-election of the PT member.
"We are declaring support for the candidacy for re-election of President Lula and vice Geraldo Alckmin for all the commitments and advances we have made and are making in the social, education, health, infrastructure, sustainable development, income and employment areas", stated Braga.
On Tuesday afternoon, 10 directorates of the Brazilian Democratic Movement (MDB), from the North and Northeast regions decided to support Lula's candidacy in the second round of the elections.
In total, directories in the states of Amazonas, Alagoas, Bahia, Ceará, Maranhão, Pará, Pernambuco, Piauí, Paraíba and Rondônia declared their support.
In his speech, the party leader in the Senate also stated that if it were not for their support for Lula, a democratic rupture could have occurred over the last four years, making it impossible for structural reforms, such as Tax, to be approved.
"None of this would have happened if we weren't living a full democracy in Brazil. If January 8th hadn't failed", added Braga.
Braga also said that even the former president of the Republic, José Sarney, supported the party's minority decision in Brazil, after a telephone call they had this Tuesday.
"My son, the MDB cannot, at this historic moment, in this historic period, fail to be on the side of freedom, on the side of democracy and on the side of sovereignty," Sarney told Eduardo Braga.
In addition to them, the re-elected senator from Paraíba, Veneziano Vital do Rêgo (MDB-PB), also asked for the floor to declare support for President Lula.
"I am deeply proud when your excellency takes this stand, no different than your excellency is, to deliver, profess and read these 10 directories that are reaffirming what was present in the first round election of our support for President Lula", said Veneziano.

In the same vein, Veneziano accused Flávio Bolsonaro of not wanting to modernize Brazilian tax legislation, stating that if he is elected he will change the structural basis of what was approved by Congress in 2024.
"We are facing risk, because on the other side, those who antagonize the reformulating project, President Lula's progressives, have already said loudly and clearly that they will have to re-discuss the tax reform, as if what we, as the Chamber and Senate, were not doing in a democratic way, participatory with Brazilian society", he concluded.
Support for Flávio Bolsonaro
The MDB formalized this Tuesday (13) majority support for the candidacy of senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL) for the Presidency of the Republic.
In total, 17 of the party's 27 state directories declared support for the Liberal Party senator's candidacy.
"We made the decision that the people took at the polls in the first round, which is the desire for change. And we want Flávio to repeat the management [of] Ricardo Nunes and [of] Tarcísio de Freitas", stated the national president of the Party, Baleia Rossi.
