Luna Rossa triumphs in the America's Cup preliminary regatta in Naples

Luna Rossa triumphs in the final match race against Emirates Team New Zealand and thus wins the second preliminary America's Cup regatta in the waters of the Gulf of Naples, as already happened in Cagliari in May. The Italian AC40 beats the Kiwis again after a flawless race. Boats paired in the first part of the race, then Luna Rossa managed to take a lead which it maintained until the final finish line. In the end, 17 seconds separate the New Zealand crew from the Italian one, greeted by prolonged applause from the tens of thousands of spectators crowded along Lungomare Caracciolo.

Peter Burling and Marco Gradoni at the helm, Maria Giubilei and Gianluigi Ugolini as trimmers: it is the team that dominated far and wide this 'Louis Vuitton Preliminary Regatta' of the 38th edition of the America's Cup. Four victories out of eight fleet races and then the final match race in which success never really seems to be in question. The New Zealand Defender tried to undermine Luna Rossa on several occasions, but in the final part of the race the gap actually widened. For the Kiwis, the consolation of the day is represented by the result of the 'B' team which won the 'Youth and Women' category, beating the second Italian boat. In the general classification New Zealand Y&W and Luna Rossa Y&W finished tied on 44 points, but the boat of the reigning champion team that obtained a better placing in the last fleet regatta is rewarded.
