Mourning in the world of horse racing: Varenne, the greatest trotter of all time, has died. "It is with immense pain that we give the news of the captain's death", we read on the Instagram page of the legendary horse, who died at the age of 31 while he was on the LJ stud in Eboli, in the province of Salerno where he spent his last years.

"It is with immense sorrow that we announce the death of the Captain", is what was written on his official Instagram page which announced the death of the stallion. «Last night Varenne passed away and the vet ascertained the cause as a fulminant heart attack. We are devastated to have learned the news this morning and we want to remember him together with all his fans and fly towards his victories", we read in the post.

«Today Varenne has given those wings to travel elsewhere, always run free and always our Captain, may the earth be light on you. Lots of love, reach Enzo", concludes the post in reference to Enzo Giordano, owner of Varenne, who died at the age of 71 in 2025.
