L'adolescent, dont la main gauche avait été arrachée par l'explosion d'une grenade assourdissante, est «toujours hospitalisé» et «sera entendu par les enquêteurs dès que le corps médical l'autorisera», a expliqué M. Thieffry. Selon les premiers éléments de l'enquête confiée à l'Inspection générale de la Police nationale (IGPN), le CRS «qui a lancé cette grenade et pour lequel il est habilité a agi sur ordre de l'autorité de commandement et a procédé à ce tir conformément au mode opératoire préconisé par la documentation de formation», a rapporté le procureur. «Il n'existe pas de vidéo à disposition des enquêteurs permettant de visualiser l'explosion de la grenade», a déploré Étienne Thieffry, alors que l'enquête cherche aussi à établir si le lycéen a ramassé la grenade ou si elle a atterri sur lui.

S'ils n'ont pas d'image de ce moment précis, «l'ensemble des témoignages (...) à l'exception d'un seul convergent sur le fait que la grenade a été tirée à longue distance (80 mètres) et qu'elle a atterri au sol avant que plusieurs manifestants ne s'en rapprochent et que l'un d'entre eux ne s'en empare jusqu'à ce qu'elle explose», a toutefois souligné le procureur. Les CRS étaient intervenus devant le lycée Auguste-Béhal de Lens après avoir essuyé des tirs de mortiers et des jets de pierres, a rappelé le magistrat.

Cette affaire, parmi d'autres cas de blessures graves de lycéens imputées aux forces de l'ordre, a suscité une vive émotion et des critiques à gauche sur les méthodes de maintien de l'ordre depuis le début du mouvement de protestation des lycéens mi-septembre.
