Bad weather in Catalonia: second victim in Tordera and red alert

This is the second victim in less than 24 hours. The region is on red alert for exceptional rainfall, with the risk of extreme weather phenomena. The president of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, invited the population to exercise maximum prudence, while the emergency remains critical especially in the north of the territory

The violent bad weather that is hitting Catalonia has caused the death of a 65-year-old man in Tordera, a municipality in the province of Barcelona, overwhelmed by a wave of torrential rain. This is the second victim in less than 24 hours. Yesterday the authorities had declared a red alert in 17 districts due to exceptional rainfall, recording accumulations of more than 200 millimeters of rain in a few hours and the risk of phenomena similar to a "Mediterranean mini-hurricane".

The announcement from the authorities

The president of the Catalan Generalitat, Salvador Illa, confirmed the man's death with a message published on social media. The governor expressed his condolences to the victim's family, defining the situation affecting the area as particularly serious. This is the second death linked to the wave of bad weather, after the death of a 102-year-old woman.

Thousands of requests for help

The exceptional rainfall put emergency services to the test. Overnight, the single number 112 received over 5,100 calls regarding damage caused by floods.

Alert in northern Catalonia

According to Illa, the emergency remains open especially in the northern part of Catalonia, where weather conditions continue to cause concern. The authorities have invited the population to maintain maximum caution and follow the indications of the Civil Protection and emergency services.
