Microsoft is Developing an Age Verification API System for Windows 11

Microsoft is establishing a new system that will allow applications to safely learn user age groups with the Windows 11 age verification API.

Microsoft is preparing to develop the Windows 11 age verification API system, which will allow Windows 11 users to share their age groups with applications. This new infrastructure aims to centralize digital security processes by enabling applications to obtain information about the age group of users.

Instead of sharing the user's exact date of birth or exact age, the system categorizes data according to certain age ranges. Applications; People under the age of 10 will be able to see one of the defined groups such as 10-12, 13-15, 16-17 and 18 years and over.

How Will the Age Verification Process Work?

The developed Windows Age APIs will also be able to convey information to applications whether the user's age has been independently verified or not. This method aims to reduce the need for applications to rely on existing methods such as credit card information or third-party authentication services.

By centralizing this process, Microsoft aims to create a more reliable standard, especially for applications that offer adult content. To protect users' privacy, not every application will be able to directly access this age data.

Access Control and Availability Date

Microsoft's Digital Safety platform will control which applications can use this API and only allow access to approved applications. In this way, it is planned to prevent misuse of the age verification process and provide a more controlled digital environment.

Windows Age APIs, which are currently documented in the Windows SDK, are not yet actively used on Windows 11. Microsoft is expected to make this feature available by the end of 2026.
