India is emerging as the biggest hub for “Frontier Professionals”, who are using AI to fundamentally rethink how work gets done, with nearly one in three professionals falling into the category.

Microsoft Work Trend Index (WTI) 2026 unveiled its India findings on Thursday, which showed that the country's share of frontier professionals in the world is at 32% — double the global average of 16%.

Microsoft defines frontier professionals as advanced, proactive AI users who deploy AI agents to handle complex, multi-step tasks and are using the technology to redesign how their teams work.

The findings further add that India’s advantage lies in a workforce actively redesigning work around agents, supported by aligned leadership and strong human oversight, along with a wider AI use.

“It's not a gap, it's a leap. One in three professionals in India are Frontier, versus one in six in the world. And a Frontier Professional isn't just someone using AI intensively. They're working with multiple agents, reimagining processes and workflows, and still keeping the human side of the bargain: judgment, critical thinking, quality control,” Puneet Chandok, President, Microsoft India & South Asia, told The Economic Times Digital.

As per Chandok, it is the hunger and appetite of Indian developers that is tilting balance in India’s favour. “India is stepping up because we had the most raw material to begin with — 27 million developers on GitHub, the largest IT services companies, serving the world from India. But the real fuel is hunger. The appetite among Indian developers to learn and build new skills is significantly higher, and that changes everything.”

A critical argument put forth by the WTI 2026 states that India’s advantage in this AI race has more to do with the human-in-the loop rather than the machines themselves.

As per the index, 63% of Indian AI users name quality control as a top skill, 59% critical thinking, and 87% say they stay responsible for the thinking – all of them are the highest among the 10 countries that were surveyed.

But how do these numbers actually materialise on the workfloor? And, what do they tell us about the changing nature of knowledge work?

Explaining the change on the workfloor, Chandok said, “These Frontier Professionals are reimagining every process in the organisation for human capital and token capital to work together. That's never happened before. Processes were always defined sequentially, because that's how humans work. But tokens work in parallel, they work 24x7 — intelligence never sleeps. So we're rethinking work itself from the ground up.”

In addition, the report also stated that 78% of the respondents from India are producing work that was not conceivable a year ago, more than the 58% seen as the global average. So, AI is producing net new jobs and roles and not just speeding up the output.

A recent note from Nomura also highlighted how AI, so far, has added jobs in Asia. It revealed that over the three and a half years since the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, AI-related hirings totaled 1.31 lakh versus firings of 61,000 across Asia. It further stated that AI is already creating winners and losers in the job market, “with entry-level jobs waning and seniority coveted.”

So, what happens to the younger generation that are entering the workforce? How will they build experience when a large part of the grunt work they do in their formative years gets automated?

Chandok takes a rather optimistic view. “The next generation won't climb a ladder — they'll build a portfolio. It's guerrilla warfare against irrelevance every day: you have to learn every day, build new muscles. But it's a far more liberating world than deciding at 17 what you'll do for the rest of your life,” he added.

The index puts the onus of enterprise-wide AI adoption on the leaders instead of the junior workforce. The data shows that while 44% of Indian leadership is clearly aligned on AI, only 25% workers say their reinvention is rewarded when it doesn't immediately pay off.

This is a mismatch that the industry might have to overcome, with the leaders expected to do the bulk of the heavy lifting.

Chandok added, “Alignment is ahead of real action. Leaders are convicted, they're using it, they're creating the platforms. Now that message has to get to the floor where the leaders walk the talk, use it themselves. Once that happens, we create the space for experimentation, and that 25% will step up, too.”

The real challenge lies in execution and adoption at scale, which becomes peculiar for a large country like India.

Amid all this, the apprehension about job losses, especially at the entry level, continues to exist, as one can learn at a faster pace.

“Don't go after degrees and titles. What travels in this world is proof. My question to every youngster I meet is: what have you shipped in the last 90 days? I don't care which school you come from. What have you shipped — and what filter, what taste, what judgment did you bring to it?” he noted.
