Migrants: thousands in the square in Ceuta, 'Enough, don't give up'

Thousands of Ceuta residents took to the streets today in a large demonstration that packed the Plaza de la Constitución.

The Spanish media reported it, specifying that the demonstrators gathered to demand a response to the critical situation in the city, following the mass influx of migrants on July 30, and to send a message that resonated throughout the afternoon: "Enough. Ceuta is not giving up".

Over 10,000 people - according to the organizers - and just over 5,000 - according to the national police - responded to the appeal of the Christian, Muslim, Jewish and Hindu communities, together with the provincial federation of Ceuta neighborhood associations.

They demonstrated peacefully for just over an hour.

Citizens of different neighborhoods, ages and backgrounds participated in a gathering conceived from the beginning as an expression of unity that transcends beliefs, cultures, origins or ideologies, writes the Efe.

The presence of thousands of people characterized the afternoon, with flags, voices and messages from citizens filling the public space.

The organizers reiterated that it was not a time for political colors or religious differences, but for Ceuta and its people: a day in which the city's different communities wanted to demonstrate that they share the same land and the same destiny.

Among those present was the city president, Juan Vivas, accompanied by members of the Assembly and representatives of various political groups, although the institutional presence took a backseat to the public response.
