Minas Gerais: Danger warning for storms and hail

Belo Horizonte and 490 other cities in Minas Gerais are under warning of potential danger for storms issued by the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet). The alert is valid until 11:59 pm this Wednesday (3) and predicts heavy rain, intense winds and the possibility of hail in several regions of the state.

According to Inmet, rainfall volumes can vary between 20 and 30 millimeters per hour, reaching up to 50 millimeters per day. Wind gusts can reach speeds between 40 and 60 km/h.

The notice covers municipalities in the Metropolitan regions of Belo Horizonte, Central Mineira, Campo das Vertentes, Oeste de Minas, South and Southwest of Minas, Zona da Mata, Vale do Rio Doce, Vale do Mucuri, Jequitinhonha and Noroeste de Minas.

June begins with rain and hail in Minas

The month of June, traditionally marked by the dry season in Minas Gerais, began with atypical conditions. Since last Sunday (31), different regions of the state have recorded storms and hail.

In cities in the south of Minas and Zona da Mata, hail covered streets and urban areas. According to meteorology, the scenario is caused by the action of a more intense cold front on the coast of the Southeast Region, favoring the formation of heavy clouds over Minas Gerais.

Experts explain that the combination between the arrival of colder air and atmospheric instability contributes to the occurrence of hail, a phenomenon considered unusual for this time of autumn.

What are the risks?

Although the alert is classified as potentially dangerous, Inmet highlights that there is a low risk of:

Electricity cut;

Falling tree branches;

Flooding;

Damage to crops.

Guidance during storms

In case of gusts of wind, Inmet recommends:

Do not take shelter under trees due to the risk of falling and electrical shock;

Avoid parking vehicles near transmission towers and advertising signs;

Do not use electronic devices plugged in during storms.
