Homeless residents where crater opened report cracks inside their home in São José

Residents of Rua Felisbina de Souza Machado, in São José dos Campos, report the appearance of cracks in their homes after the opening of a crater.

The region has already been affected by two previous craters. Therefore, 4 houses and 1 residential house were closed, affecting 156 residents.

A new drainage gallery is being built. Residents support the work, but fear suffering losses resulting from the cracks.

Technicians inspected the houses this Thursday (10) and promised to correct the damage. The city plans to complete the works by December 20th.

Residents of Rua Felisbina de Souza Machado, in Jardim Imperial, in São José dos Campos, face a new problem after a crater opened up on the road: cracks began to appear inside the houses.

Roseli de Almeida says that a crack appeared on Saturday and has increased in recent days. The problem also affected the house's gate, which warped and became difficult to open and close.

"On Saturday this crack started to appear. It was very thin then, right? Then, as the days go by, it's getting bigger. From yesterday to today, the thickness of the cracks has increased."

Another resident, Valtenir Raimundo Teixeira, also identified cracks in the property. According to him, the first signs appeared about 15 days ago, including in a space that had just been renovated for his granddaughter.

"It's in the living room here, it's in the living room at home, in this other house. We listen and it was there at night too. So, it's also at the gate."

The region had already been affected by two craters. The first appeared in January, after a truck was swallowed by the hole. In February, a second crater appeared after a water gallery ruptured during rain.

Four houses and a residential building with 34 apartments were closed, forcing 156 people to leave their properties.

A new gallery is being built to solve the drainage problem. Work is already underway, but residents fear that new cracks will appear before the work is completed.

"We are in favor of the work and it is necessary, as it is. The work has to come out anyway, it has to come out. But this means that we are not at a loss with these cracks there."

According to the Secretary of Works Management, José Turano, city hall technicians were at the residences this Thursday (10) to assess the problems.

"In the end, when we have the final organization of Felisbina Street, we will take all the pathologies that were caused by the work and correct them all. This is an obligation of the city hall and the residents [can] rest assured."

The city hall's forecast is to complete the piping by the end of September and complete the entire work by December 20th.

In the specific case of Roseli's house, a team from the city hall should go to the property this Friday (11) to repair the gate.
