Today, Thursday 3 September 2026, the second day of the 83rd edition of the Venice Biennale International Film Festival was held (THE PROGRAM - THE RED CARPET OF THE SECOND DAY).
Among the 21 films in Competition (ALL FILMS IN COMPETITION) Bucking Fastard by Werner Herzog was screened with Kate Mara, Rooney Mara, Orlando Bloom and Domhnall Gleeson (THE REVIEW).
Also in competition is the film Wild Horse Nine by Martin McDonagh and with John Malkovich, Sam Rockwell and Steve Buscemi (THE REVIEW).
Out of Competition are the Non-Fiction films Everest: The Other Side by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin and Burgundy by Michael Dweck and Gregory Kershaw, as well as the Italian Fiction film No Pain by Gianni Amelio and with Alessandro Borghi, Valeria Golino and Valerio Mastandrea (LA SCHEDA).
The cast of the film Balcanica by Nicola Sorcinelli and with Matilda De Angelis (competing in the Giornate degli Autori section), the Masterclass with George Clooney and the Venice Immersive press conference also arrived.
In the Orizzonti section it was the turn of the films Moragheb (Falling House) by Mohsen Gharaei and Too Much Sugar by Robert Greene. The Orizzonti Corti – Out of Competition section is also underway.
In the Giornate degli Autori section there were the films Waiting for Ken Loach by Simone Amendola, Al Baraneya by Ashgan El-Hamus, I Plant My Head in the Garden by Hoda Taheri and Boris Hadzija and Shoes broken by Roberta Torre and with Barbara Ronchi.
In the Critics' Week section Les Métamorphoses, Au Féminin by María Giménez Cavallo and Il grande Jaffa by Marco Santi.

Wild Horse Nine, the review: John Malkovich wins an Oscar at the Venice Film Festival
In competition at the Venice Film Festival 83, Wild Horse Nine is the new film by Martin McDonagh, a black comedy set in Chile in 1973, on the eve of the coup against Salvador Allende. John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell are Chris and Lee, two CIA veterans sent to Rapa Nui with too many secrets, several sins and a friendship that resists everything. Between Moai, wild horses, Chilean students, ghosts of American politics and dialogues that seem to come out of Beckett, McDonagh transforms Easter Island into a western of the soul. And Malkovich, repellent, funny, lethal and poignant, gives an Oscar-worthy performance.

George Clooney: "It's lucky to be successful at 33 and not at 23"
“I think being successful at 33, instead of 23, was probably the best thing that happened to me.” This is how George Clooney spoke about his experience as an actor in the masterclass held today at the Venice Film Festival: "I was able to make mistakes in private, without the pressure of the outside world. Being young and successful is not very useful." And again: "At first, I was poor and scared, knowing that everything could go wrong or right, but I was also excited! Soon I was working on a bunch of commercially successful TV series and films. Then, the script for #OceansEleven ended up in my hands!."
Barbera: "Selling 14% more tickets at the Venice Film Festival was not a given"
At the Festival "so far yesterday we have sold around 14% more than in the past and it was not to be taken for granted, both due to the moment of economic difficulty we are going through and because there are fewer stars. Evidently people come to the Festival not only for the stars but for the event, for the films, to share this experience and discover the proposals that we make every year and which this year are less obvious". Alberto Barbera said this on the sidelines of the inauguration of the Italian Pavilion space at the Excelsior Hotel. The director is very satisfied with the opening night of this edition, which was "very emotional" thanks also to George Clooney, "an extraordinary person, very generous, very attentive to all the fans, to all the journalists. He is kind, he is never grumpy, he is never aggressive". Barbera then underlines the presence of a new young audience: "I have been here for 15 years and I have seen the audience change year after year with impressive speed. Before we knew almost everyone who came to the festival, it was a sort of game of a tour of the festivals, even among journalists, critics and filmmakers. That generation there is disappearing also for age reasons obviously, but the extraordinary thing is that there is instead a very young audience who has the same curiosity, the same passion that we had when we were very young and came to the Festival. They are kids aged 16 to 25, with a real passion, curiosity and interest." Furthermore, this year, as in the past, for Barbera "Venice offers numerous films that can aspire to campaign for the Oscars, you will see. The Festival maintains this privilege of being a launch platform also for reaching the Academy for both American films and international films which are then nominated by individual countries".
Gianni Amelio and hospitality: "Remigration bad word"
In the press conference to present No Pain at the Venice Film Festival, Gianni Amelio responded to a question on today's political use of the term "remigration", recently associated with the political debate raised by General Roberto Vannacci. "I can say that 'remigration' is a bad word, which among other things is also a grammatically incorrect neologism. It's not in any book", declared the director. Compared to the past, he added, any prospect of salvation has disappeared: "What is the difference between that time and today? That in all emigrations there is something happy, because there is still the prospect of arriving in a better place from which you left. Now you know that either you will find a rifle pointed or you will die sooner, because you will die on the Mediterranean which has become a tomb. This is today's world. It is a world
which goes beyond the simple and very complex problem of migration, because it is a world that is or has definitively become barbaric".

Gianni Amelio presents "No pain" at Venezia 83
Presented out of competition at the Venice International Film Festival,Nessun Dolore is the new film by Gianni Amelio. The protagonist is Davide, a Roman bookseller whose life is turned upside down by an encounter with a North African child and a young Algerian migrant. The cast includes Alessandro Borghi, Valeria Golino and Valerio Mastandrea. The film will arrive in Italian cinemas on September 24th distributed by 01 Distribution.

Amelio: "The most serious thing in today's world is closure"
"I believe that 35 years ago we would not have expected a drift of this kind which does not only concern the non-welcome of others but concerns our withering perhaps due to fear, fear of others but above all of themselves. There is a sense of closure in one's 'particular' which is the most serious damage that a human being can do to himself". This was said by director Gianni Amelio, presenting the film "Nessun Dolore" (Out of competition) today at the Venice Film Festival. The film stars Alessandro Borghi and Valeria Golino and tells a story of the reception and integration of migrants. My greatest regret, he continued, "is that I, old, leave a different world for my son and grandchildren. At my son's age I had so many hopes that I don't know how to convey them to him because I see the disbelief in his eyes if I say that everything is fine."

Expedia's owner's mega sailing ship has arrived
The sailing ship Eos, owned by the media magnate Barry Diller, owner of the Expedia group, returns to sail the Giudecca canal on the occasion of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival. The vessel, one of the largest and most luxurious private sailing schooners in the world, was spotted moored in the body of water in front of the Palazzo del Cinema, not far from the quay where VIPs and insiders of the festival, ongoing at the Lido until 12 September, parade. Built in 2006 by the German shipyard Lurssen, Eos measures approximately 93 meters in length and is valued at around 70 million dollars. It can accommodate up to 16 passengers with a crew of approximately 21 people. Diller, president of IAC and Expedia Group, is married to fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg. It is not the first time that the sailing ship stops in the lagoon during the film festival: it was noticed moored in the same canal already in 2024, on the occasion of the 81st edition of the Festival.
