A Margaret River mother has shared her incredible tale of survival after a tree fell on her moving car on a major highway in Western Australia's South West.

Lauren Healy was driving at 110 kilometres per hour on Bussell Highway near Metricup, 250 kilometres south of Perth, during WA's severe storm on Sunday afternoon when a large tree limb landed on the bonnet of her grey SUV.

"I remember seeing the tree start to fall in front of me, and I just remember being really calm, strangely enough.

"And just having almost this voice that just said, 'Brace yourself, you're going to be fine.'"

Ms Healy managed to crawl out of the wreckage with no obvious injuries and credits "divine intervention" for her survival.

The mother of two said her main concern was not for herself, but for her two sons, aged 18 and 16.

Ms Healy said she was the sole parent to her sons after her husband died five years ago.

"I just wanted to make sure I was OK for [my sons]," Ms Healy said.

"I definitely had some divine intervention."

Miraculous storm survival

Ms Healy's crash is the second confirmed account of a tree falling onto moving cars along Bussell Highway during the weekend's storm, south of Busselton.

On Sunday afternoon, a couple in their 70s were taken to Busselton Health Campus with minor injuries.

Both incidents occurred as Perth and parts of Western Australia's south were being lashed by abnormally destructive weather conditions as a severe storm intensified on Sunday evening.

The Bureau of Meteorology recorded 135km/h wind gusts at Cape Naturaliste, setting a new wind speed record for May.

'Milliseconds' from death

Ms Healy said she was still processing the traumatic incident and just how close she came to tragedy.

"I'm just very grateful and certainly won't be out on the road in those sort of conditions ever again."

Ms Healy said numerous other motorists stopped to help her, but in the chaos of the event, no-one called Triple Zero (000) until over an hour had passed.

"And I was assured that someone had called an ambulance, but I think there was confusion there because there were so many people,"

An ambulance eventually arrived, and confirmed that Ms Healy escaped with no major injuries.

Ms Healy said making it home to her family was all that mattered.

"[I am] just very lucky to be here and getting up and making lunch for my son," she said.

The storms resulted in almost 200 calls for help to the South West's State Emergency Services and about 6,000 homes remain without power in WA's South West this morning.

Western Power's head of operational maintenance Brett Hoving said contractors were being dispatched today.

"There's about 10 crews of contractor crews heading to the south today to actually help the local resources as well, given the magnitude of faults that we've got," he said.

Open Questions

  • What caused the specific tree limb to fall?
  • Were there any contributing factors to the delay in calling emergency services?
  • What is the extent of the damage to Ms. Healy's vehicle?
  • How long will power restoration take for the remaining 6,000 homes?
