Munich nominated as German candidate for the 2036, 2040 or 2044 Olympic Games

After Munich was selected by the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) as a candidate to host the 2036, 2040 or 2044 Olympics, competition with foreign countries is now beginning. How promising the chances are for Germany to organize the Olympic Games for the first time since 1972 will be shown by its competition with India, Qatar, South Korea, Hungary and Turkey. The decision about the host role in 2036 will be made in three years. However, the first hurdle in the further process at the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is only six months away.

The DOSB has been an official applicant to the IOC since autumn 2025. He is in constant communication with the organization. “We can get started at a high level,” said DOSB executive board member and IOC member Michael Mronz. Ronald Rauhe, the Minister of State for Sport and Volunteering, announced that Chancellor Merz would also contact IOC President Kirsty Coventry.

Stage two

Germany only has half a year to present itself as suitable for 2036. Although the games are not due to be awarded until the summer of 2029, the IOC wants to reduce the number of candidates to four to six. According to the organization, there are currently a “double-digit” number of applicants. This intermediate stage was only decided in June. Mronz said that "the candidates will come from different continents." He “doesn’t assume” that Munich will miss this circle.

Third and final stage

If Germany does not reach the intermediate stage, the application would have to be suspended until the games in 2040 or 2044 are awarded. However, if Germany achieves status, another preliminary decision will be made shortly after the Los Angeles games. The IOC then begins the third and final selection stage before the host selection.

The third stage of the exchange then only takes place with one candidate. At the IOC general assembly, the vote should then only be officially carried out.

The organizer of the 2036 Summer Games will then have seven years of concrete preparation time. Munich's Mayor Dominik Krause and Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder said that construction work should actually begin now for 2036. However, a double award is theoretically possible for the years 2036 and 2040.
