Ship Vespucci returns to Italy after the North American campaign

Ship Vespucci returned to Italy, after the North American Campaign which began on 9 May in Genoa. Since yesterday sailing off the coast of Sardinia arriving from Cadige (Spain), then docking at the Ichnusa pier in the port of Cagliari for the embrace of the thousands of visitors, around 10 thousand, who will be able to admire her for the next two days, until 15 September.

"I would say that this tour went well. A tour that took us across the Atlantic, to the United States to honor the 250th anniversary of American independence. So 3 stops in the USA: Baltimore, New York, Boston, with a naval parade on July 4th under the Statue of Liberty on the Hudson River.

After that we moved further north to Canada to honor another invitation, that of the Rendez-vous naval de Québec, together with other ships in Canada and then the return crossing. So after 4 months back in Italy, Cagliari first stop, clearly happy with how the campaign in North America went and to be back home again, in short among the Italians", said the commander of Vespucci, Captain Nicasio Falica.

In particular, the journey that took the sailing ship's crew (around 220 soldiers to whom around 150 students are added in the summer) across the ocean, from Tenerife, the last European stop in the Canary Islands, to the United States was long. "Twenty-nine days - recalls the commander - the longest voyage in the history of the Amerigo Vespucci ship, which we wanted to do under sail, which is the way this ship was conceived.

And so we went to look for the trade winds so we had to go very south, so an initially 3000 mile route became a 4000 mile route to go looking for the wind. But this allowed us to arrive sailing across the Atlantic and even a day early."

A 2026 World Tour - announced in September 2025 by the Minister of Defense Guido Crosetto and which is an initiative of the ministry and the Navy, produced by Difesa Servizi spa and developed in collaboration with the ministries of Foreign Affairs, Culture, Sport and Disability - which will end in Trieste on the occasion of the Barcolana, in October after stopping in Venice (from 2 to 7 October), Naples on the occasion of the America's Cup preliminaries and Castellammare di Stabia, port of construction of the sailing ship, from 17 to 19 September.
