Newborn baby saved by a medical resident in Castelmassa

A little girl of just a few days old in serious danger, alive thanks to the promptness and professionalism of a specialist. It happened, in the night between Friday and Saturday, in a community house in the province of Rovigo. The newborn in respiratory arrest was saved by a young man on duty as a medical guard in the Castelmassa community home, who performed resuscitation and unblocking maneuvers on her for about 15 minutes, managing to get her to breathe again. Then the intervention of Suem 118 and the transfer to hospital.

It was the parents who rushed the little girl, in the middle of the night, to the community home - one of the new clinics spread throughout the area provided for by the Pnrr: the little girl was in respiratory arrest due to suffocation. The little girl was cyanotic, foaming at the mouth, not crying and not breathing. Doctor Giuseppe Puliafito – in his second year of specialization in Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine in Verona and for two years as a Continuity of Care doctor – did not lose heart and fought until she came to her senses. The little girl gradually started breathing, crying and sneezing again, gradually recovering a rosy color. She was then entrusted to the Suem doctors who completed the first care maneuvers and the little girl was then transferred to the emergency room for further diagnostic tests and the continuation of care.

"It was certainly a very strong situation" the young doctor told the Gazzettino. "I have faced emergencies, but never with a newborn or a child. In those moments there isn't much space to think about emotions: you have to immediately understand what is happening and act. When I saw the little girl unconscious and in respiratory arrest, but with her heart fortunately still beating, I immediately called the advanced emergency services and began resuscitation maneuvers. I tried to put into practice what I learned during my training, maintaining the clarity necessary to face the emergency."
