Novak Djokovic suffers shock first-round exit at US Open against Mariano Navone

Novak Djokovic suffered a shock first-round exit at the US Open, losing to Argentina’s Mariano Navone in a gruelling five-set match. The 39-year-old struggled with physical problems and frustration throughout the contest, eventually losing 7-6 (5), 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 after four hours and 36 minutes.

Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, appeared far from his best and made 70 unforced errors. He also reportedly vomited during the match and later seemed to suffer from cramps in his left foot. A doctor gave him medication, while his lower back was massaged during a medical timeout.

Despite taking early leads in the opening set, Djokovic could not maintain his advantage. He recovered to win the second and third sets, giving himself hope of completing another comeback. However, Navone refused to back down. The defeat was Djokovic’s earliest US Open exit in 20 years and the first time he had ever lost in the opening round of the tournament. Djokovic was visibly emotional during the match, with tears suggesting the moment was about more than just physical pain as he struggled through what becme a defining moment in his career.

Navone, a 25-year-old Argentine who won his first ATP singles title earlier this year, stayed composed against one of tennis’ greatest players. Djokovic became emotional during the match, with his tears appearing to reflect both physical pain and the frustration of a difficult night.

Reflecting on the occasion, Navone said, “(It) was very tough for me because you are playing with the ‘GOAT’ on this court,” said Navone, who idolized Djokovic growing up. “For sure it’s the best thing I’ve had on court. This is an amazing court and the biggest stage. It’s amazing, the way we play. I mean, five sets. ... I’m very happy. I don’t know. What can I say?”

After securing the biggest win of his career, Navone added, “It’s unbelievable,” Navone said. “This means a lot. It’s a dream come true.”

The result has raised fresh questions over whether Djokovic, who also lost in the first round in Cincinnati earlier this month, will return to the US Open or any Grand Slam again.
