A resident recorded a rain cloud approaching while driving along a rural road between Presidente Bernardes (SP) and Santo Anastácio (SP), on Thursday afternoon (10).
In the images, the large cloud covers the sky in the interior of São Paulo, accompanied by lightning and the beginning of rain. The phenomenon is characteristic of a cumulonimbus, a cloud associated with thunderstorms. Watch above.
The Civil Defense of the state of São Paulo had already warned of the possibility of storms in the region. To g1, meteorologist William Minhoto reinforced that the image is quite consistent with the scenario observed by weather radars during Thursday afternoon.
“During that period, there was intense formation and development of areas of instability, favoring the emergence of clouds with great vertical development and high moisture load,” he said.
These atmospheric conditions favored the occurrence of heavy rain, accompanied by gusts of wind and, in some places, hail throughout the afternoon, according to the meteorologist.
Doctor in Physics and climatologist Vagner Camarini explained to g1 that cumulonimbus clouds are characteristic of thunderstorms and concentrate a large amount of energy inside them. Therefore, they can cause electrical discharges (lightning), thunder, moderate to strong gusts of wind and heavy rain.
According to the expert, the main risks associated with this type of cloud are the large volumes of rain in a short period, which can cause flooding and landslides, as well as strong winds capable of knocking down trees and damaging buildings. The formation may also be accompanied by hail.
"In short, the larger the size of this cloud, the greater the disruption will be", warns Vagner Camarini.

At around 7pm this Friday (11), Civil Defense reported that, throughout the night, the state of São Paulo will be under the influence of areas of instability associated with a meteorological trough and the arrival of a cold front, which will maintain unstable weather in a large part of São Paulo's territory.
Therefore, there are conditions for isolated rain showers and/or thunderstorms, of moderate to strong intensity, mainly in regions that border Paraná, such as Presidente Prudente, Bauru, Itapetininga and the Sorocaba region.

Videos released by the Civil Defense of the State of São Paulo show damage caused by hailstones that damaged cars, this Thursday (10), during heavy rains in the interior of SP.
According to the agency, hailstorms were recorded in Florida Paulista and Presidente Epitácio, with no occurrences that required assistance from municipal bodies. Images sent by residents show hailstones the size of golf balls (see below).

The State Civil Defense monitors the incidents recorded this Thursday (10) in different municipalities in São Paulo as a result of rain and gusts of wind.
Among the main impacts are flooding, falling trees, roofing, landslides, falling walls and damage to structures. So far, there are no reports of injured people.
Furthermore, the Civil Defense of the State of São Paulo issued a meteorological risk warning for this Friday (11) and Saturday (12), with storms forecast in different regions of São Paulo. Presidente Prudente (SP) is among the cities with the greatest potential for severe storms.
The alert released by official bodies on Thursday (10) remained valid until the last update. The guidance of the State Civil Defense is that, during storms, the population:
seek shelter in a safe building;
avoid open areas, trees, posts, towers and metal structures;
stay away from roofs, signs, facades and other vulnerable structures during strong gusts;
in case of hail, stay in a covered and protected place, away from windows;
do not cross streets, bridges or flooded areas;
follow official Civil Defense alerts and follow the guidance of local authorities.
