Eight US Marines train with Argentina in Ushuaia amid tensions over the Falklands-Malvinas

Eight US marines are training with Argentine soldiers in Ushuaia, in the far south of the country, at a time of tension with the United Kingdom over the sovereignty of the Falkland-Malvinas Islands.

The activity which began on 8 September and is scheduled to run until the 22nd, involves the Argentine Marine Infantry Battalion number 4 and, Infobae reports, includes exercises in the mountains and extreme cold conditions.

The training is part of a cooperation program between the two navies started in 2017, according to the Argentine Navy. The presence of the US military coincides with President Javier Milei's decision to relaunch the project for an integrated naval base in Ushuaia, about 700 kilometers from the Falklands-Malvinas, administered by the United Kingdom and claimed by Argentina. The Argentine government plans to start work on the Integrated Naval Base on January 2, 2027.
