Police find meth hidden in McMuffin during traffic stop in Broome

Police have released footage of the moment they allegedly found a ziplock bag of methylamphetamine hidden inside a McMuffin in the West Australian town of Broome.

In the video, officers can be seen conducting a traffic stop at Cable Beach and can be seen rummaging through a fast-food bag containing items from numerous outlets before pulling out a breakfast sandwich from McDonald's.

Upon pulling the McMuffin apart officers found a small ziplock bags filled with white powder that they said was methylamphetamine.

The man driving the vehicle was not known to police and was arrested on August 20.

Detectives charged the 39-year-old Derby man with possession of a prohibited drug with intent to sell or supply.

'Awkward' part of the job

Detective Senior Sergeant Trisha Stjepic said people were becoming more creative in their efforts to hide illicit substances.

"[A] fast-food item is a first, but hiding drugs inside the vehicle we found a lot more common recently," she said.

"[People] are being more cautious and drugs aren't being left out in the open."

Senior Sergeant Stjepic said thorough searches should be conducted during all traffic stops.

She said people went to extensive lengths to conceal items, including someone who hid illicit drugs in a rubbish bag in the boot of the car.

"When you're conducting searches under the Misuse of Drugs Acts [sic], you obviously have to search the whole vehicle," Senior Sergeant Stjepic said.

Crackdown on meth

The McMuffin bust was one of two incidents involving fast food and illicit drugs in Broome in August.

Police allegedly found cannabis, methylamphetamine and a knife in the possession of a 21-year-old man at a fast-food outlet on August 29.

They allege he travelled 2,080 kilometres from Perth with the intent of selling and supplying prohibited drugs within the Broome area.

Senior Sergeant Stjepic alleged the suspect ran away from police, which led to his arrest.

Both men are due to appear in court later this month over the unrelated incidents.

Broome police have been actively focusing on the methylamphetamine trade over the past year.

"We've got a strong focus on targeting those involved in the sale and supply of illicit drugs within the community," Senior Sergeant Stjepic said.
