TUNIS, October 6. /TASS/. Former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi’s daughter Aisha has come out on top in an unofficial survey asking the beleaguered nation's people who they would prefer to lead the country in the future, the Al Hadath broadcaster reported.

According to the report, in the September poll, a total of 141,502 people out of more than 549,000 participants voted for Aisha Gaddafi, who outpaced the nearest competitor by over 30,000 votes. The organizers stressed that the informal poll had been neither an election nor a referendum.

Meanwhile, several groups of the former Libyan leader’s supporters have called on Aisha to lead the movement following the death of her brother Saif al-Islam.

Ashraf Abdel Fattah, a member of the Supreme Council of the Libyan Tribes, told Al Hadath that a large part of the former regime’s supporters saw Gaddafi’s daughter as the most suitable candidate to lead the movement. He added, however, that it’s up to her to decide whether to take on that political role.

Aisha is Muammar Gaddafi’s only biological daughter, one of eight biological and two adopted children. After her father was ousted in 2011, she left Libya and moved first to Algeria and then to Oman, where she was granted political asylum. Her elder brother Saif al-Islam was killed in his own home in northwestern Libya in February at the age of 53.

Open Questions

  • Will Aisha Gaddafi accept a political role?
  • How will the current Libyan government respond to this movement?
