São Paulo City Hall requests expansion of the blue lane for motorcycles in 72 lanes

The administration of Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB) made a new request to Senatran (National Traffic Secretariat) to install sections of the "blue lane", exclusively for motorcycles.

The document, sent to the federal agency on Friday (4), foresees the creation of 84 kilometers of new lanes on 72 roads that already have the device today.

Among them are the avenues Hélio Pellegrino, Rio Branco, Assis Ribeiro, Doutor Arnaldo, Cruzeiro do Sul, Rudge and Nicolas Boer, as well as streets such as Henrique Schaumann, Bom Pastor, João Teodoro, Estados Unidos and Pio XI. The list also includes viaducts and tunnels.

For each road, the city hall sent a study justifying the need to implement the blue lane. In technical reports, management presents results regarding the improvement of road fluidity and the reduction in the severity of accidents involving motorcyclists.

According to a report by CET (Traffic Engineering Center) released in April this year, in the stretches where the lane was implemented, the increase in motorcyclist deaths was 17.5% – from 57 to 67 cases, from 2022 to 2025. The rate is lower than the increase of 66.5% recorded in the city in the same period considering motorcyclists.

The risk of a serious or fatal accident outside the blue band is 9.5 times greater than within it, says the report.

The topic has already been the subject of dispute between the Nunes administration and the Lula government. The municipal administration even accused the federal government of blocking the requests sent for the creation of these exclusive corridors for motorcycles.
