Premier League: Brighton & Hove Albion scores from the halfway line – Fabian Hürzeler's team now second

When Diego Gómez received the ball on the halfway line, he had apparently already seen that Walter Benítez, the Crystal Palace goalkeeper, was a touch too far in front of his goal. Gómez simply shot directly at it from a good 50 meters.

It was a goal for every year in review, but just one of five on this day: Gómez made it 2-0 in Brighton & Hove Albion's 5-0 win over Palace in the Premier League. A feat befitting a team that is currently shaking up English football.

Coach Fabian Hürzeler's team is currently in second place and five points behind league leaders Manchester City. Arsenal FC could still overtake Brighton on this seventh matchday. The Arsenal that recently lost 3-0 against the Hürzeler team.

After Palace player Jaydee Canvot's early own goal in the 4th minute, Gómez's long-range shot in the 7th minute and a goal from Yasin Ayari made it 3-0 after just ten minutes. Charalambos Kostoulas (49th minute) and Jack Hinshelwood (84th minute) scored the other goals in Brighton's 5-0 win.

In 2024, Hürzeler, 33, led FC St. Pauli into the Bundesliga before moving directly to England. He is now in his third season at Brighton. In the first two seasons his team finished eighth in the Premier League.

One of Hürzeler's most important players is Pascal Groß, who took part in the World Cup in North America with Germany, but only played a supporting role there. This season, the 35-year-old has already contributed to eight goals after seven league games: he scored three goals himself and prepared five more. The team's other pillars also include 19-year-old Luka Vušković, who was active in Hamburger SV's central defense last year.
