Spring looks like summer: Piracicaba reaches 35.2ºC and breaks heat record, according to USP

Quick Look

  • Piracicaba (SP) recorded the hottest day of 2026 with 35.2ºC this Friday (9), surpassing the previous annual record.
  • With air humidity at 39%, below the recommended 60%, there was a yellow alert for storms with a risk of hail, winds of up to 60 km/h and rainfall of up to 50 mm.
  • An expert from Esalq/USP relates the climate pattern to the 2015 El Niño, with favorable prospects for agriculture in the Southeast, except for sugar cane, whose harvest could extend until December due to humidity, reducing the sugar content (ATR).

AI-generated summary

Why It Matters

Spring in Piracicaba began with high temperatures above 34ºC in September, following a common pattern for the season, where maximum temperatures often exceed those recorded in summer. The record of 35.2ºC recorded on September 9, 2026 surpassed the previous mark of the year, recorded on January 9.

Piracicaba (SP) recorded the hottest day of 2026 on Friday afternoon (9), reaching 35.2ºC. According to data from the Meteorological Station of the "Luiz de Queiroz Esalq/USP" College of Agriculture, the new mark surpasses the old record for the year in the municipality, recorded on January 9. See below what the forecast looks like this Sunday and the Our Lady of Aparecida Day holiday.

With the high temperatures, the air humidity index was 39% below the ideal for human health this Friday. Recommended level is 60%.

Spring with a summer look

Spring began with warm days and a predominance of sunshine in the Piracicaba region (SP) in September, with maximum temperatures above 34ºC.

High maximum temperatures are common during this period, and they usually exceed those recorded in summer, according to professor and researcher Fábio Marin, from the Department of Biosystems Engineering (LEB) at the Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz (Esalq), the campus of the University of São Paulo (USP).

Storm alert

The yellow storm warning alert is valid until the end of this Saturday (10) and predicts rainfall of up to 50 millimeters in some regions, with winds of 40 and 60 km/h and chances of hail in areas of the Piracicaba region.

The warning also estimates a low risk of electricity cuts, damage to crops, falling tree branches and flooding.

How does El Niño affect the countryside and the city?

The professor and researcher at USP states that the rains at this time favor agriculture, but negatively impact cities and urban centers, with floods.

"The expectation is rain. It's not about drought and fire. Civil Defense must be prepared for landslides and flooding", he warned.

Strong as in 2015

Professor Fabio Marin points out favorable prospects for agriculture. The historical comparison shows that the current behavior of heavy rainfall in September is similar to the pattern observed during the strong El Niño of 2015, reinforcing the trend of above-average rainfall in the Southeast.

The North and Northeast face different realities governed by water scarcity and neutral temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean.

"This is a good trend for agriculture, from the Triângulo Mineiro downwards. In the north of Brazil, the concern is the opposite. There, the concern is more about drought, especially in the extreme north, Pará, Amazonas, Roraima, Amapá and even the Northeast. However, the Northeast is regulated by the temperature of the Atlantic Ocean. It's not just the temperature of the Pacific that controls the Northeast. The Atlantic is neutral, neither disfavoring nor favoring", analyzed the expert.

Southeast

For the Southeast, the outlook is good for agriculture, with the exception of sugar cane, which still needs to be harvested in the field.

In the sugar-energy sector, the current crop harvest extends until December due to operational delays resulting from humidity, causing a drop in the sugar content of sugarcane fields (ATR).

"This harvest should arrive by December, with a little delay. The sugar content in the sugarcane fields also drops a little bit, we call it ATR, it gets lower. Productivity improves, but sugar concentration drops and there should be sugarcane left over for next year. We call this cane bisada. But, on the other hand, the sugarcane that is in the field, which has already been harvested, is very favored and should produce well in 2027", he said.

"We are starting to have an optimistic look at cultures here. Pastures are also favored, grain sowing [here] in the region is also favored due to the rain", he added.

What to Watch

AI outlook — possibilities, not facts

  • The harvest of the current sugarcane crop in the sugar-energy sector will extend until December due to operational delays resulting from humidity.

    Likely · Within months

  • Sugarcane productivity will improve, but sugar concentration (ATR) will fall, leaving a surplus of cane for the 2027 harvest.

    Likely · Within months

Open Questions

  • ?What was the exact relative humidity at the time of the temperature record?
  • ?What are the climate projections for the rest of spring in Piracicaba and the region?
  • ?How will high humidity affect the productivity of crops other than sugarcane?
