RM exhibits 140 pieces from his personal collection at SFMOMA... Includes many works by modern and contemporary Korean artists

San Francisco Museum of Modern Art exhibits 140 works from private collections, including Hyong-geun Yun and Ucchin Jang

This event, which will be held until February 7 next year, is the first exhibition of RM's personal collection at the museum.

RM directly participated in the overall planning and curation of the exhibition. He selected works and planned the exhibition together with SFMOMA's America Castillo and co-curators Hyoeun Kim.

In addition, exhibition text and work descriptions written in Korean and English will be presented so that visitors can experience the works more closely. An English and Korean audio guide recorded in RM's voice was also prepared. The music playing in the exhibition hall was also selected by RM himself.

At the exhibition, you can see about 180 works carefully selected by RM and SFMOMA. Works by artists representing modern and contemporary Korean art, including Hyeong-geun Yun, Rae-hyun Park, Ucchin Jang, Ok-yeon Kwon, Yun-sin Kim, and Sang-bong Do, are introduced. In addition, works by SFMOMA's collections of Kim Hwan-ki, Nam June Paik, Mark Rothko, Agnes Martin, Henri Matisse, and Georgia O'Keeffe will also be available to visitors in one space.

Among these, RM collected about 140 works, most of which are being shown to the public for the first time in the United States.

RM said, "This is my first time sharing my collection under my name. I think it's rare for a person to show his or her identity as honestly as the collection he or she has collected over a long period of time. In that sense, I think this exhibition will be a fairly long self-introduction."

He explained, “There are many works by modern and contemporary Korean artists in my collection. There may still be names that are unfamiliar to people outside of Korea, but I have been collecting them with the desire to add a better perspective and sense, and that process has led to this exhibition.”

This is the first time SFMOMA has collaborated with a K-pop artist since its establishment. The museum first proposed the project after noting RM's taste and continued interest in modern art.

SFMOMA Director Christopher Bedford said, "This project is closely aligned with SFMOMA's direction of expanding the global conversation surrounding art," adding, "We are creating a space for new voices in the museum, while also inviting visitors who have encountered contemporary art and Korean art through RM to come here."

BTS, of which RM is a member, is currently carrying out the largest stadium-level world tour in K-pop history, ‘ARIRANG’. BTS will kick off its South American tour in Bogotá, Colombia on the 2nd and 3rd of next month.
