PROCESSIONS THROUGHOUT ITALY
Protests have been called throughout Italy, in the wake of what is also happening in France and Spain, to protest against the high cost of living, the "barracks school", i.e. the cap on foreign students, and the degradation of educational institutions. Yesterday the first tensions with dozens of occupied institutions, from Milan to Naples. Turin was the city that experienced the strongest tensions.
YESTERDAY'S CLASHES IN TURIN
In particular, yesterday (15 October), in Turin, a group of around 40 young people with their faces covered by masks and balaclavas raided three schools, also throwing stones at the police. TODAY NEW EVENTS IN TURIN
And this morning, again in Turin, new marches started, once again amid tensions.
EGGS THROWN AT THE POLICE IN TURIN
In Turin, protesters also threw eggs at police officers lined up in riot gear in front of the regional school office. "It is no longer the time for dialogue, we are angry. There is no money for our schools but for their wars. If this week we occupied thirty schools, next week there will be a hundred. Let's burn everything", is the message that was chanted during the demonstration.
TEACHERS BETWEEN STUDENTS AND POLICE
Some Turin teachers then intervened between the students in the procession and the deployment of the police forces in Corso England. The teachers, who took to the streets in solidarity with the students, lined up at the head of the procession, arm in arm behind the "Turin Assembly" banner.
"TIRED OF SCHOOLS FALLING TO PIECES"
"We are tired of studying in schools that are falling apart, of seeing our lives used as a propaganda ground and of witnessing policies that do not respond to the real needs of students. We need safe schools, dignified school buildings and investments in education, not decrees that fuel discrimination and division. The safety and dignity of those who study must be a priority", explains Angela Verdecchia, National Coordinator of the Middle School Students' Network. In the photo, Turin.
HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN PROCESSION IN ROME
"We are 20 thousand, the people write the school", shout the promoters of the procession that brought the students together in Rome. "We protest against Valditara and its measures", they declared as they passed in front of the Colosseum.
THE PROCESSION IN MILAN
Students also take to the streets in Milan, for the "No one is a foreigner" procession which unites various demands from the student world: from opposition to the Meloni government's measures regarding school reform to high rent, to the rejection of rearmament.
EX MORTUARY OCCUPIED IN MILAN
Then, at the end of the student procession, in Milan some of the participants occupied the former morgue - currently empty - in the central Via Francesco Sforza, behind the state university.
Open Questions
- What will the government's measures be after the protests?
- Will there be further occupations next week?
