A 'steel safe' requirement is coming to get a gun license!

NEWS CENTER - Minister of Internal Affairs Mustafa Çiftçi stated that a new regulation change has been prepared for people who will be given gun licenses, and announced that it will be mandatory to have a "steel safe" at home to keep licensed weapons.

Minister Çiftçi shared with the public the legal regulations implemented to protect children from criminal organizations and the new gun license conditions in a television program he attended.

Minister Çiftçi reminded that with the recent amendments to the Child Protection Law, the concept of "child dragged into crime" was abolished and the definition of "child in judicial process" was introduced. Emphasizing that children cannot be left to the mercy of new generation criminal organizations, Minister Çiftçi explained the legal measures taken against the gangs' methods that push children to crime.

Minister Çiftçi stated that the fact that children under the age of 18 and especially under the age of 15 received lesser sentences compared to adults was exploited by criminal networks and said, "Criminal organizations were making young children commit crimes because they knew that the penalties were low. The penalties were increased with the legal regulation made and entered into force before the parliament was closed. This regulation was a deterrent and accurate step that will prevent gangs from using children." he said.

Minister of Internal Affairs Mustafa Çiftçi announced new steps to be taken to prevent incidents caused by children's access to licensed weapons at home. Stating that those who leave the firearm within the reach of the child will be sentenced to nearly 3 years in prison unless the action constitutes another crime, Minister Çiftçi stated that a radical change in the regulation will be made.

Noting that dangerous situations may occur such as licensed weapons being secretly taken from homes by children and taken to school or the street, Minister Çiftçi emphasized that it is a necessity to keep the weapons in safe areas. Pointing out that new security standards will be introduced within the scope of the Law on Firearms and Knives, Minister Çiftçi said, "Those who have a licensed gun must keep it in a locked cabinet or steel safe that children cannot access. We will impose a steel safe obligation on those to whom we will grant a gun license. As in Germany, homes will be visited and this situation will be checked. This condition will be an integral part of obtaining a gun license." he said.

Minister of Internal Affairs Mustafa Çiftçi said that the new steps do not only include deterrent penalties; He stated that he focuses on ensuring the digital safety of children and showing greater sensitivity to the care obligations of families.

Emphasizing that the role of the family is vital in this multi-legged system, Minister Çiftçi evaluated that parents should closely follow the digital footprints and social lives of their children.
