The number of deaths in Pernambuco rose to six due to the heavy rains hitting the state. This afternoon, the Military Fire Department reported having found the body of a 34-year-old man who had been missing since Friday night (1st). The victim was located in the Capibaribe neighborhood, in São Lourenço da Mata, in the metropolitan region of Recife.
Earlier, the state's Civil Defense had confirmed the fifth death in Recife, in the Dois Unidos neighborhood. The new report of incidents shows a total of 1,605 homeless people and 1,089 homeless people across the state.
The most seriously affected municipalities in Pernambuco include: Goiana, with 510 homeless and 994 homeless; Recife, with 671 homeless people; Olinda, with 170 homeless people; Jaboatão dos Guararapes, with 127 homeless; Timbaúba with 42 homeless and 52 homeless; Igarassu with 27 homeless and 21 homeless; Paulista 32 homeless and 11 homeless; Camaragibe 5 homeless and 11 homeless; Limoeiro 9 homeless; and Glória do Goitá 12 homeless.
The governor of Pernambuco, Raquel Lyra, declared a state of emergency in Pernambuco this Saturday afternoon (2) and the measure will be published in an extra edition of the state's Official Gazette. In a press conference, the governor highlighted that the declaration of the emergency situation will accelerate State actions and works in the affected municipalities and allow the necessary investments from the federal government to be sought to rebuild what was destroyed by the rains.
The measure was adopted after meetings at the Integrated Center for Social Defense Operations (CIODS), in Recife, with representatives from the National Civil Defense, the Ministry of Integration and Regional Development (MIDR), representatives from municipal civil defenses and other state bodies involved. An online meeting was also held with the mayors of the affected municipalities to align strategies and define next actions.
In total, 29 shelters were activated to accommodate the affected population. At the same time, the State Government intensified the distribution of humanitarian aid to the affected cities. In Goiana, 150 mattresses, 300 sheets, 38 cleaning kits and 38 hygiene kits were delivered.
In Paraíba, also hit by the storms of the last 48 hours, the impacts are mainly concentrated in the municipalities of Conde, João Pessoa, Bayeux, Campina Grande, Ingá, Itabaiana, Mogeiro, Patos, São José dos Ramos, Sousa, Cajazeiras, Pilar and Cabedelo. According to preliminary information from the state Civil Defense, there are records of 1,500 displaced families, 300 homeless people, around 9,000 people affected and two deaths. A crisis committee was installed by the governor of Paraíba, Lucas Ribeiro, with the Paraíba bodies involved to take the necessary measures in the municipalities affected by the intense rains.
The National Civil Defense reported this Saturday that it has been providing guidance to municipalities affected by the rains in Pernambuco on how to access federal resources. According to the Ministry of Integration and Regional Development (MIDR), states and municipalities that have recognized an emergency situation or state of public calamity can request resources for civil defense actions. Requests must be made through the Integrated Disaster Information System (S2iD). Based on the work plans sent, the Civil Defense technical team evaluates the proposed goals and values. After approval, the transfers are formalized in ordinances to be published in the Official Gazette of the Union, releasing the corresponding amounts.
