Son Heung-min, South Korea’s captain, is on the verge of making history in the FIFA World Cup by becoming the country’s all-time leading scorer with one more goal. Despite being tied with Ahn Jung-hwan and Park Ji-sung with three goals, Son remains focused on team success over personal achievements ahead of his fourth World Cup this summer.

Speaking from the Zions Bank Training Center in Herriman, Utah, where the national team is in camp, Son downplayed the pursuit of records: “If I put the team above all else and worry about how I can best help the team first, then goals will naturally follow.”

Son, who won the Premier League Golden Boot in the 2021-2022 season with Tottenham Hotspur, is currently second in South Korea’s all-time scoring list with 54 goals, four behind legend Cha Bum-kun. This season with LAFC, however, Son has yet to score in league play, with his only goals coming in the Concacaf Champions Cup in February and April.

Addressing concerns over his form without being asked, Son asserted: “A lot of people are worried, but I’m only worried if I am not playing well. I don’t think it’s the case now. Physically, I am feeling great.”

Looking ahead to the World Cup, where South Korea aims to improve upon their round of 16 finish in 2022, Son emphasized the importance of teamwork: “We have to know where our teammates are with our eyes closed… Rather than talking about the outcome, it’s important to do our best each and every day.”

Son also reflected on the World Cup’s significance: “The World Cup is a festival, and not everyone gets an opportunity to represent their country there. I want to savor the experience.”
