SEOUL, October 8. /TASS/. South Korean President Lee Jae Myung observed the first test of a hypersonic glide vehicle, the presidential office reported.
"President Lee Jae Myung observed the first test launch of a hypersonic glide vehicle currently under development," presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung said. She added that the vehicle is being developed using South Korean technology.
"Hypersonic glide vehicles can suddenly neutralize [the enemy’s] key strategic assets in the event of an emergency thanks to their unpredictable flight path and immense speed. This is a key strategic asset that can change the course of battle," said Kang Yu-jeong.
She added that the experimental vehicle successfully separated from its booster and seamlessly executed its planned flight path under hypersonic conditions, and the target was hit. The launch was aimed at testing super-high temperature thermal protection materials, guidance and control systems, as well as irregular maneuverability at low altitudes, Kang said.
"This successful launch marks a major milestone in that preparations are complete to secure a new deterrent capable of striking critical targets across the theater of the Korean Peninsula," the presidential spokesperson stated.
Lee Jae Myung congratulated the designers and said the government would continue to provide support for the development of advanced weapons. After the tests, Lee Jae Myung inspected the military's Hyunmoo-5 surface-to-surface missile, dubbed by South Korean media the "monster missile" for its massive heavy weight and destruction power.
