Suspect of killing PM sergeant is found dead in penitentiary in Piauí

Lucas da Silva Oliveira, suspected of killing a sergeant from the Piauí Military Police (PMPI), was found dead this Wednesday (19), at the Bispo Sebastião Alves de Souza Penitentiary, in Buriti dos Lopes. The information was confirmed to g1 by delegate Abimael Silva, from the Piauí Civil Police.

According to the delegate, the suspicion is that the man took his own life. In a statement, the Piauí Department of Justice (Sejus-PI) reported that he was found in the cell he occupied during the breakfast payment procedure.

Forensics and the Institute of Legal Medicine (IML) were called to the scene. The exact cause of the suspect's death will be investigated.

Lucas was arrested in the early hours of Sunday (16) after the death of PMPI 3rd sergeant José Arnobio Farias Cardoso. A security camera recorded the moment of the crime.

The Department of Justice, through the Directorate of the Penitentiary Administration Unit, informs that inmate Lucas da Silva Oliveira was found hanging in his cell, during the breakfast payment procedure, this Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at the Buriti dos Lopes Prison Unit.

The Judiciary Police, the Forensics, the Legal Medical Institute (IML) and the Public Prosecutor's Office were called in compliance with the protocol established by the Joint Ordinance of SEJUS-PI, PUBLIC MINISTRY, TJPI and SSP-PI. The agency also emphasizes that it is providing due assistance to the inmate's family, as well as opening an administrative inquiry to investigate what happened.
