Tesla Model S and Model X Production Ends After 11-14 Years

Tesla Vice President of Engineering Lars Moravy was interviewed by foreign media. He admitted that the company had decided to retire the Model S and Model X as early as a year and a half ago. The key reason was not lack of market demand, but that the platform architecture used by the two cars was too old and difficult to cope with increasingly stringent global vehicle safety regulations.

The Model S platform was first developed in 2008 and officially launched in 2012. Although Tesla has continued to upgrade the software and hardware of its vehicles over the years, the core body structure has not been significantly modified. As organizations such as Euro NCAP and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety continue to improve crash test standards, it is increasingly difficult and costly for older platforms to maintain the highest safety ratings.

In addition to safety architecture issues, Model S and Model X are also considered to be detrimental to the full introduction of future autonomous driving technology. Since both vehicles are Tesla's early products, it is difficult to meet future fully self-driving technology needs in terms of electronic architecture and platform design.

More importantly, Tesla has actively invested in humanoid robot projects in recent years and regards Optimus as its next growth engine. In order to expand Optimus mass production, Tesla also needed to free up more factory capacity, so it finally decided to retire the Model S and Model X and focus its resources on new-generation products and artificial intelligence.

However, this does not mean that the two flagship models will disappear forever. Moravy also left hints for the future, saying that it is not the best time to reinvest in Model S and Model X, but whether it will return to the market with a new platform or a new form in the future, "everything is possible", leaving room for the resurrection of these two classic car series.
