Texas man charged with murder after mother's remains found in duffel bag

A Texas man has been charged with murder after cops found the remains of his 73-year-old mom stuffed in a duffel bag.

Arman Alexander Malik, 34, was arrested Monday by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, days after the gruesome discovery.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez wrote on Facebook Monday that deputies found Malik’s mom, Dyna Guadalupe Sorto De Malik, dead inside a local home after being called over for a welfare check on September 1.

Deputies were called to the home at around 10 p.m., local time, after Sorto De Malik’s daughter said she could not reach her, per local outlet KTRK.

Following the smell of a decomposing body, deputies found Sorto De Malik’s remains wrapped in a bedsheet and rug, both covered in blood, inside a duffel bag, KTRK reported, citing court records.

There was a pool of blood seeping onto the carpet underneath the bag and blood spattered on a dresser, according to deputies. Malik appeared to have dried blood under his fingernails and scratches around his hands, detectives said.

Malik, who appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance, was detained at the home when police discovered his mom’s body and was taken to a hospital for evaluation, according to Gonzalez.

Detectives determined that Malik concealed his mom's body to stop police from finding it and initially charged him with Tampering with Physical Evidence-Concealing a Human Corpse, Gonzalez said.

He was booked into the Harris County Jail Monday and slapped with an additional charge of murder.

Neighbors said Malik recently moved in with his mother, with one local, Shaun Ward, telling KTRK, “I cannot believe that happened right next door to me.”

“Who could do that to their mom?” local reporter Jessica Willey asked Ward.

“You gotta be outta your mind,” he replied.

Malik’s defense team said he had psychological issues and needs medical treatment, according to the local outlet.
