Tragedy in the Caucasus: Powerful Avalanche Sweeps Away Group of Climbers

The tragedy occurred on Sunday, September 6. Around 5 p.m. local time, a powerful avalanche occurred from the Mizherga massif - one of the highest and most demanding peaks in the Russian part of the Caucasus. A group of 33 mountaineers were within its reach. They crossed the famous Bezengi Gorge, known for its picturesque but also dangerous valley glaciers.

Zero chance of escape

According to information provided by the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, the avalanche surprised the climbers, giving them virtually no chance to escape. "Unfortunately, eleven people died," emergency services representatives said on Monday morning.

Six people were injured and the fate of another six remains unknown. Ten mountaineers managed to descend the mountain on their own and notify the services about the tragedy.

Rescue operation in extreme conditions

An extensive rescue operation began immediately. More than 50 rescuers are involved in the activities, struggling with extremely difficult terrain and the constant threat of further avalanches. The relief of the terrain, numerous glacier crevasses and unpredictable weather significantly complicate the search.
