Automobile Sales and Electric Vehicle Market in Türkiye in the January-September Period

According to the information compiled by the AA correspondent from the Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association (ODMD) data, automobile sales decreased by 15.45 percent on an annual basis in the January-September period to 627 thousand 977, and light commercial vehicle sales decreased by 5.12 percent to 175 thousand 488.

During this period, 258 thousand 453 gasoline and 204 thousand 956 hybrid cars were sold. Diesel car sales were 34 thousand 520, and the number of autogas car sales was 8 thousand 969. Sales of fully electric cars that run only on electricity were recorded as 120 thousand 329.

When vehicles with "extended range" systems, where a gasoline generator charges the battery and driving is provided by an electric motor, are included, the number of electric car sales in this period was 121 thousand 79 with a market share of 19.3 percent. (Extended range cars are also included in the "electric" class as per the Customs Tariff Statistics Position.)

9 percent decrease in electric vehicle sales

While there was a decrease of 23.5 percent in gasoline car sales, 40.7 percent in diesel cars, 9.5 percent in electric cars and 0.8 percent in hybrid cars in the 9 months of the year, there was a 44.7 percent increase in autogas cars sales in this period.

Experts state that the main reason for the decline in diesel car sales is that global manufacturers continue to end the production of diesel cars, so new diesel cars are not introduced to the market.

The share of electric cars was 19.3 percent

The share of gasoline cars in sales, which was 45.5 percent in the January-September period last year, decreased to 41.2 percent in the same period this year. During this period, the share of diesel cars decreased from 7.8 percent to 5.5 percent, while the share of autogas cars increased from 0.8 percent to 1.4 percent.

In the same period, the share of total sales increased from 18 to 19.3 percent for electric cars and from 27.8 percent to 32.6 percent for hybrids.

The share of electric and hybrid vehicles reached 51.9 percent

When electric and hybrid cars were evaluated together, it was seen that they constituted 51.9 percent of the total market in the 9 months of the year and sales reached 326 thousand 35. Thus, more than half of the cars sold in Türkiye were electric and hybrid vehicles.

A total of 15 thousand 128 electric cars were sold in September. There was a 17.1 percent increase in electric vehicle sales compared to the same period last year. The market share of these cars in September was calculated as 23.7 percent.

In the same month, 17 thousand 911 hybrid cars were sold, and the market share was recorded as 28.1 percent.
