Why It Matters
Osman Gazi Floating Production Platform was prepared to increase domestic natural gas production in the Sakarya Gas Field.
According to the statement made by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Osman Gazi Floating Production Platform will double the domestic natural gas production in the Sakarya Gas Field in the Black Sea.
With the platform, which will operate in the Black Sea for 20 years, it is aimed to increase the daily natural gas production in the Sakarya Gas Field from 9.5 million cubic meters to 20 million cubic meters.
The Osman Gazi platform, which was first shared with the public by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in July 2024, has a length of 298.5 meters, a width of 56 meters and a depth of 29.5 meters. President Erdoğan announced that the name of the platform was determined as Osman Gazi on May 27, 2025, and sent him off to Filyos from the Dolmabahçe Working Office on May 29, 2025.
The platform, which went through accreditation and certification processes in Zonguldak Filyos, also underwent modification processes while preparing for its mission in the Black Sea. 11 facilities on the platform, which has 21 separate facilities in its superstructure, were rebuilt in accordance with the characteristics of the Sakarya Gas Field. 7 of these were produced in Türkiye and 4 abroad. The other 10 facilities were modified to suit the site and integrated into the platform.
There are a total of 642 kilometers of electrical cables on the platform, where approximately 6 kilometers of cabling is carried out per day within the scope of maintenance and preparation works. Approximately 7 thousand people took part in the work, which also included approximately 30 kilometers of piping.
In August this year, the flame tower, which provides the safe removal and evacuation of hydrocarbon gases released in emergency situations, was mounted on the platform. The tower, which is 96 meters high, has a floor area of approximately 65 square meters and weighs 260 tons, was placed in its place on the platform.
The first gas will be burned this year, the first production will start in 2027
Osman Gazi, which has a staff capacity of 140 people, will work for 20 years in a location approximately 170 kilometers away from the land, after being sent off from Filyos Port on Saturday, October 17. The platform will work like a factory, making the processed natural gas ready for use and transmitting it to the national grid.
It is calculated that the daily natural gas production of the platform will correspond to a financial volume of approximately 10 million dollars at today's prices and will contribute 3.5 billion dollars annually to the Turkish economy.
After Osman Gazi's farewell to office, it is planned to burn the first gas from the flame tower by the end of the year, and to start production at the beginning of 2027. Thus, the second phase of the Sakarya Gas Field is expected to be completed.
"A historical value to the goal of full independence in energy"
Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar noted the following in his post on his NSosyal account:
"On the way to our goal of complete independence in energy, Türkiye's first floating production platform, Osman Gazi, is ready to go to its place of duty in Mavi Vatan. On Saturday, October 17, we will send off our giant platform from Filyos to the Black Sea. With Osman Gazi, which will operate 24/7 for 20 years in the heart of the Black Sea, we will double our domestic natural gas production in the Sakarya Gas Field and reach 20 million cubic meters per day. Thus, we will increase the natural gas demand to 20 million cubic meters per day. "We will increase the number of households we cover with domestic resources from 4 million to 8 million. We are proud to add historical value to our goal of complete independence in energy in the Turkish Century with this giant work that will provide an added value of 3.5 billion dollars to our country's economy."
