UK newspapers cover Xi Jinping's White House visit, NHS delays, migrant numbers, and Andy Carroll assault

Many of the papers on Friday include photographs of Chinese President Xi Jinping's historic visit to the White House. The Financial Times leads on quotes from his address, where Xi said the US and China should "coexist in peace" and avoid being drawn into conflict.

US President Donald Trump and his wife Melania are pictured alongside Xi on the front page of the Times, standing on the White House balcony after a military show. The main story for the paper focuses on a sex offender who was repeatedly allowed to return to his home overlooking the playground he targeted. It leads on a statement from the Metropolitan Police commissioner, who said police officers felt "hamstrung" by a system that he said results in "seemingly unfathomable decisions". Sir Mark Rowley told reporters that "the children should be put first, not the paedophile".

The Sun says Sarah Ferguson has received offers of up to seven figures for an autobiography, and is just "days away" from a book deal. The paper adds that the Royal Family are still reeling from the revelations in Earl Spencer's memoir about his sister, Princess Diana. The paper's front page also includes a nod to the upcoming fight between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua. The headline reads "It's on at last".

People who believe they have ADHD or autism must wait two years before they can be assessed, according to the Guardian. The paper reports that the decision to delay assessments is because the NHS is struggling to meet the "surging demand", and cannot afford the cost of the number of assessments people are seeking. It adds that the NHS disclosure of this approach precedes a major government-commissioned review of the "colossal increases" in diagnoses of ADHD, autism and mental illness.

The NHS is also the focus for the i Paper, which reports that overcrowding in A&E has been linked to more than 500 deaths a week across the UK. It says that, on average, emergency rooms are operating at 175% capacity.

"Labour's army of migrants", reads the Daily Mail, which says that the number of small boat migrants who have reached the UK under the Labour government is "larger than the entire British Army". The paper says that 83,279 migrants have reached British shores since the last general election, according to figures quoted by Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp.

Former England striker Andy Carroll is pictured on the front page of the Mirror, after he revealed he was sexually assaulted by a man in 2021. The paper reports the incident took place at Carroll's home, with the unnamed attacker set to stay over after arriving to watch a boxing match.

Carroll is also the leading story for the Star, which says the perpetrator assaulted the former footballer while he slept. His attacker was jailed for three years following the incident, the paper adds.

The UK has launched its first retail facial recognition system in a London coffee shop, which the Metro claims "endangers civil liberties" and "risks unleashing fraud on a dangerous new level". The paper explains that when a customer goes to pay, the system, which is powered by online bank Revolut, checks their biometrics against those provided when they first signed up.
