UK Sunday Papers Criticize Government, Warn on Israel Sanctions, Tax Policies, Free Speech, Drug Overprescribing, and Oasis Reunion

The Sunday edition of the Telegraph is heavy on criticism of Prime Minister Andy Burnham, leading with a warning from the shadow foreign secretary that any plans to sanction Israel "risks jeopardising British national security". Earlier this week, Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband told Parliament he would be introducing a "comprehensive reset" of policy on Israel "in the coming weeks". Tom Tugendhat told the paper that damaging relations with Israel could put British citizens in danger, as terrorist attacks in the UK have been foiled as a direct result of Israeli intelligence. The paper also includes a warning from a leading American economist, Arthur Laffer, who says Britain is "taxing itself to death" and in a "death spiral" due too little growth.

Tax is also the focus for the Sunday Express, after Reform UK deputy leader Robert Jenrick pledged to do away with income tax on state pensions. Jenrick, who the Express refers to as the "would-be Chancellor", unveiled the "bold" plans to raise the tax-free personal allowance to £15,000, up from £12,570 where it has been frozen since 2021.

The Mail on Sunday reports that a "major free speech row" has "erupted", after it was revealed more than 60,000 people had been arrested in the past five years for "communications offences".

"Mixing pills sends 1,000 elderly people a day to A&E" says the Times, leading on its own investigation into what it says is an "overprescribing epidemic". The paper cites a study published earlier this year, which says about eight million people in the UK are at risk of medical side effects because they are being prescribed five or more drugs to take daily.

Several papers are running stories on what they say is Liam and Noel Gallagher's first joint interview in over 20 years, as part of their new documentary Don't Look Back In Anger. "Some Might Stray" reads the Daily Star - a reference to their hit Some Might Say - after Noel said his brother missed final rehearsals and only arrived "minutes before" the first date in their "Oasis mega bucks comeback tour" in 2025.

Similarly, the Sunday Mirror says: "Noel feared tour disaster". The paper says the reunion tour was "on a knife edge" after Liam failed to attend rehearsals, with Noel telling the documentary there was "still tension" between the brothers ahead of their Cardiff concert in July 2025.

The Oasis documentary also dominates the Sun on Sunday, which has homed in on Liam Gallagher's admission that he has "finally quite booze". The paper reports the catalyst for his sobriety was the reunion tour; it says he told the documentary the experience was too "precious" to spoil by partying.
