US military completely withdrawn from Iraq

The US military has completely withdrawn from Iraq. The last US soldiers have left the country, the US Department of Defense said. On Monday, Iraqi government officials announced the withdrawal of all US combat troops and logistical support forces. Iraq therefore wants to celebrate its "independence" and public institutions should remain closed for four days.

Iraq and the USA had agreed on the withdrawal in 2024. In recent years, according to the US Department of Defense, around 2,500 US soldiers were stationed in Iraq. Most recently these were in Erbil in the Kurdish region, at a base near Baghdad airport and in the capital's government district, known as the Green Zone.
