Uzbek student in 20s arrested after fatal hit-and-run of elderly cyclist in South Korea

An Uzbek student in his 20s was placed under emergency arrest after allegedly fatally striking a cyclist in his 80s with a car and fleeing the scene, police said Sunday.

According to Iksan Police Station, the student struck the victim at around 1:40 a.m. Saturday while driving in Iksan, North Jeolla Province. The victim had been riding a bicycle on the road ahead of the student's vehicle.

The cyclist died at the scene, while the student allegedly fled, leaving the car behind.

He turned himself in to police about three hours later after acquaintances who had been riding in the car urged him to do so. Police said there were no indications that the driver had been under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash.

Police placed the driver under emergency arrest on suspicion of hit-and-run resulting in death and are considering seeking a formal arrest warrant.
