Suspect arrested after fatal shooting at rave in Switzerland

Police in Switzerland have arrested a suspect after shootings at a rave over the weekend. According to investigators, the arrest took place on Monday night. The suspect is a 43-year-old Swiss man. He was stopped as part of the search measures that had been initiated.

According to their own information, the police are currently assuming that the perpetrator was a lone perpetrator. The investigation into the exact nature of the crime as well as the background and possible motive was ongoing.

A 22-year-old Italian woman was killed in the shooting during the Aarauer Rave techno party near Zurich on Sunday night. Five other people were injured, a German and four Swiss men between the ages of 24 and 31. They suffered varying degrees of injuries and were taken to hospitals for treatment.

The visitors to the event were on their way home when one or more unknown people fired several shots at a group of people around 2:30 a.m., the police said. Authorities again called on anyone with video footage of the event to make it available to them.

Traces of various calibers found

The police found "traces of two different calibers, a pistol or submachine gun and an assault rifle," police chief Michael Leupold said on Sunday. According to police, the shots were fired in two different locations - on the rave site in Aarau and near an adjacent caravan camp.

Gun attacks are very rare in Switzerland, but weapons are widespread in the Alpine republic. According to the Swiss study program Small Arms Survey, there were almost three weapons for every ten inhabitants in 2017. This puts Switzerland in 16th place worldwide in terms of the number of weapons per capita.
