Naver Labs builds Bohwagak and cultural heritage digital twin

The ‘Qing Dynasty Master’s Statue’ donated by China is also permanently preserved digitally.

(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Oh Ji-eun = Naver Labs, Naver's prior technology research and development subsidiary, and the Gansong Art and Culture Foundation announced on the 11th that they will introduce the Gansong Art Museum VR Tour service, which allows users to tour the main exhibition space and collections of the Kansong Art Museum in virtual reality.

Kansong Art Museum, the first private art museum in Korea, has been open only during regular exhibition periods in spring and fall.

With the introduction of this service, users can now view the museum's interior at any time in a PC or mobile environment without restrictions of time and space.

The service was implemented by Naver Labs by replicating the exhibition space Bohwagak and the works submitted to the Cultural Heritage Exhibition as digital twins.

Users can move along the actual exhibition hall route, view artifacts, and check detailed explanations.

You can also appreciate relics that are not on site.

The Qing Dynasty Master's Statue, which guarded the main gate of the Gansong Art Museum for a long time and was donated to China last July, was permanently preserved and restored as digital data, and the Goesan octagonal stupa and stone octagonal pagoda, which were outdoors and difficult to access, were placed in the VR space.

Naver Labs explained that it has significantly reduced production costs and processes by applying vision technology that performs precise 3D mapping using only a smartphone camera without professional scanner equipment.

Naver Labs has consistently applied its own spatial intelligence technologies, such as indoor positioning and mapping, to the cultural heritage field.

Representative examples include augmented reality (AR) navigation, which was introduced to the National Museum of Korea in 2022, and Flying View 3D, a Naver Map based on synthesis (NVS) technology that reconstructs three-dimensional scenes from a few photos.
