Train derailment near Lewes in England: several injured, deaths unknown

A train derailed near the English town of Lewes in the county of East Sussex in the late afternoon. The rescue service responsible said on Facebook that 150 people were on board during the accident in southeast England. Two people were seriously injured and nine suffered less serious injuries, it said. Several patients were taken to hospitals. According to current knowledge, there are no fatalities. Aerial photos from a BBC helicopter show that several carriages in the rear part of the train have overturned, and some people are standing on the carriages.

The cause of the accident is still unclear

According to the railway company Southern Rail, there are currently train cancellations and significant delays due to the incident. Accordingly, the train derailed between Haywards Heath and Lewes. Transport Minister Heidi Alexander said on X that she was “deeply concerned”. Together with the railway and “local partners”, passengers should be helped quickly. How the incident came about is currently unclear. According to the BBC, the British Train Accident Investigation Board (RAIB) has already been called in.
