Tensions have been rising in the Middle East due to conflicts involving Iran, Saudi Arabia, the US, and Israel, with frequent attacks on oil infrastructure.

Saudi Arabia’s largest crude oil processing facility was damaged in a drone strike on Monday, according to open-source analysts reviewing satellite imagery and a Gulf official cited by the Wall Street Journal. The images circulating online appear to show a large smoke plume rising from the Abqaiq complex, along with burn marks and apparent damage around parts of the facility. Yemen’s Houthis claimed responsibility for what military spokesman Yahya Saree described on X as strikes on “targets and sensitive points in the supply and transport of crude oil from eastern Saudi Arabia to [the port of] Yanbu.” While Saree did not identify the plant by name, the description is consistent with Abqaiq, a key hub linking Saudi Arabia’s eastern oil fields with the Red Sea export terminal at Yanbu. The Kingdom acknowledged that its oil infrastructure in Eastern Region had been targeted and blamed Iran-backed militias in Iraq. The Wall Street Journal, citing a Gulf official, reported that the Abqaiq complex had sustained only minor damage. Located in Eastern Province, Abqaiq is the world’s largest oil stabilization facility, preparing roughly 5% of global crude oil supplies for transport. The oil goes via the East-West pipeline to Yanbu, from where shipments travel to Europe via the Suez Canal or via the Bab el-Mandeb strait to Asia. According to a Reuters analysis of Gulf export routes, the East-West pipeline is Riyadh’s main alternative to the Strait of Hormuz. Any disruption to the corridor would further constrain the Kingdom’s export options and could increase pressure on global oil supplies. The strike marks an escalation of the Houthis’ campaign against Saudi energy infrastructure. The group says it is retaliating for recent Saudi airstrikes in Yemen and has threatened to impose a blockade on the Kingdom after Riyadh resumed military operations against Houthi targets. The attack comes amid the wider regional conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the US, with Iranian-aligned groups increasingly targeting US allies and energy infrastructure across the Middle East. According to the Associated Press, Gulf officials have privately complained that the Trump administration failed to warn them before the US-Israeli attack on Iran in February, leaving Gulf states exposed to retaliation. They reportedly believe US military resources were focused primarily on protecting American and Israeli assets, while Gulf partners remained vulnerable.
