Chagos Archipelago Sovereignty Transferred to Mauritius, Chagossian Repatriation Remains Uncertain
The UK has transferred sovereignty of the Chagos Archipelago to Mauritius under a 2025 treaty, excluding Diego Garcia, where a joint UK-US military base will remain operational under a 99-year lease. The agreement resolves a long-standing sovereignty dispute but leaves unresolved the right of the forcibly removed Chagossian community to return to Diego Garcia.
