Commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz falls to lowest level since May

Commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz has fallen to its lowest level since May, Reuters reported, citing ship tracking data.

“Over the past 10 days, an average of 10 ships with raw materials on board passed through the Strait of Hormuz per day - this is the lowest figure since May,” the publication says.

According to shipping monitoring service Kpler, 15 cargo ships passed through the strait on Friday, 13 on Saturday, and traffic dropped to 10 ships on Sunday.

On Sunday, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright admitted that the current volume of oil traffic through the Strait of Hormuz is lower than it was before the American attacks on Iran.

On Saturday, Pentagon Central Command said U.S. forces attacked three Iranian oil tankers off Khark Island, in the Jask area and in the Gulf of Oman. In response, Iranian forces struck three US-affiliated oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, and Reuters later reported that the IRGC launched ballistic missile attacks on a US aircraft carrier and a destroyer.

In mid-June, the United States and Iran signed a memorandum intended to begin the process of concluding a peace agreement. However, three weeks later, a new round of escalation began: Washington accused Tehran of shelling commercial ships in Hormuz, after which the parties resumed exchanging blows.
