The climbers who died under an avalanche in the mountains in the Chereksky region of Kabardino-Balkaria were first thrown back by a shock wave at a distance of up to 300 meters, and then covered by a landslide, the Russian Mountaineering Federation (RFA) told RIA Novosti.

“It was the collapse of a hanging glacier... The mass itself was not so large... but the impact was very strong. People were thrown 200-300 meters by the shock wave. That is, first they were thrown back, and then they were covered,” the agency’s interlocutor said.

The State Emergency Service for Kabardino-Balkaria reported on September 6 that an avalanche came down the slope and covered a group of climbers in the Bezengi Gorge in the mountains of Kabardino-Balkaria.
